Initially, I picked up this book, The White Magic Five and Dime by Steve Hockensmith and Lisa Falco, because I was looking for something based in Arizona. Most cozies I read are based either on the East Coast or along the Pacific Northwest, so I wanted something different – and I live in the desert so why not?
The main character, Alanis, finds out that her estranged mother who she hasn’t talked to in almost two decades, left her a small fortune and an occult shop all the way in Arizona. Oh, and she was murdered. Something she can’t quite put her finger on compels her to not only right her late conman mother’s wrong, but also find out more about what led to her murder… and who might have murdered her.
Besides a few missing words, I really couldn’t complain much about the book. It was enjoyable through and through. Alanis uses the skills her conning mother taught her for good (or at least, she doesn’t use them to swindle anyone), and has a way of turning every conversation into fun banter from flirting with the tall, dark, and handsome town detective to pissing off a few possible suspects.
This is the first story in a long time that ended up surprising me with who the real killer was, and the clues were there all along. There are more than a few surprising twists along the way! All in all, this cozy got a five star review from me.
If you’ve read this one, what are your thoughts on it?
